If you say your products are 100% natural, why are some of your products not 100% organic?
This is not always possible for a number of reasons. Many certifying bodies and organisations will not certify water as organic, no matter how pure the source. So if there is water content in a cream or lotion, the product cannot be certified as 100% organic. Products such as lotions, creams, shampoos and conditioners that contain herbal infusions and floral waters must also contain ingredients such as emulsifiers, surfactants and some kind of preservative system, otherwise they could not be manufactured or made to work. Also, many natural cosmetic manufacturers take a natural extraction from an ingredient to obtain an active compound which is then added to the cosmetic itself. In doing so, the original organic ingredient has been changed, and although the process carried out is a natural one, the end product is now a different one from the original and as such cannot carry organic certification. This does not of course detract from the natural and organic quality of the end product.
Why do your most of your suppliers not use glass containers instead of plastic?
All of the plastic containers used by our suppliers are recyclable, biodegradable, and can be burned without releasing harmful or noxious gasses, and cost a lot less to transport than heavier glass containers. Also, many of our products are used in the bathroom where plastic containers do not pose the same safety risks. Plastic containers also reduce the risk of bacterial contamination to the products. The large amount of energy required to produce glass discourages most of our suppliers from using it to protect their products as approximately three times as much energy goes into the production of a glass container than a plastic one.
Do any products in your range contain parabens?
It is our policy that none of the products we offer contain parabens.
Do your toothpastes contain flourides?
No. The only toothpastes we offer our customers are from the Green People range, and they do not believe that a medication should be taken via toothpaste when cleaning the teeth. Flouride, when taken into the bloodstream via toothpaste, has a hardening effect on the bones. By offering toothpaste without flouride, we are leaving the supplementation of flouride as a choice rather than forcing people to take a medication that they may prefer not to. If flouride is required, a supplement may be taken, and a varied and balanced diet will provide an adequate supply.
What is an essential oil?
Essential oils are made by extracting the volatile fractions of plant through the process of distillation. They are very highly concentrated, and generally reproduce the odour and taste of the starting material. They have also have strong antiseptic and antibacterial properties and can help to preserve other ingredients from deterioration.
How are Sun Protection Factors calculated?
European legislation sets out which ingredients may be used in the filtering agents contained in all sun-screens before they can claim a Sun Protection Factor. The legislation also gives the percentage of each ingredient that the finished product must contain in order to achieve and claim a given level of protection. This ensures that all sun-screen products made by different manufacturers using different ingredients can be compared on a like-for-like basis.
